"The Deserted Village" is categorized as "poetry of sensibility" because it addresses social issues that people were increasingly becoming aware of, as the Industrial Revolution was taking shape in the late eighteenth century. Not only does it address social issues, but also fears of the day. Luxury was the enemy at the time when rural life and livlihood were falling victim to English landowning aristocracy.
